Vecoplan Truck

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

Vecoplan has released their newest product, a mobile shred truck using the same shredding single-shaft rotary grinder technology that you find in their line of plant based machines. This adds some more valuable competition in the mobile manufacturer space.

Chris Hawn, Sales Manager at Vecoplan told me today that they have booked orders already and more on the way. He did not disclose how many. The new trucks will be displayed onsite at both the NAID and WasteExpo conferences mid May.

You can see details on the new shred truck by visiting the Vecoplan website.

Iron Mountain Keeps Buying and Buying

Wednesday, April 21st, 2004

March 4th, Iron Mountain announced the acquisition of the assets of Portland, Oregon based, Docu-Shred Inc. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. This most recent acquisition affects customers in the Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington markets.
March 30, Iron Mountain announced the acquistion of the archive services business of IBM Deutschland GmbH subsidiary DISOS. The acquisition is effective 1-April-2004. This acquisition adds nine records centers in five new German markets; Berlin, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Dresden and Erfurt.

And from sources I know it seems they are still out beating the bushes for others in a city near you.

Good Destruction Copy

Tuesday, April 20th, 2004

Was perusing the NAID website and found this article that outlines a number of the key reasons that shredding is a critical part of company procedure.

I think these items need to be clearly understood by your clients as you sell any destruction services. One item in the list concerns me a little. Item 6 says the following:

6.) Most Records Storage Companies Do Not Have The Equipment To Provide Shredding Services.

Many commercial records storage facilities offer records destruction as a service to their customers. However, in a survey conducted by the National Association for Information Destruction, a majority of the commercial storage firms were found lacking the equipment necessary to provide the service themselves. It is a common practice in that industry to subcontract the destruction of the records. In some cases, disreputable storage firms were found misleading their customers by charging for secure records destruction, while the materials were being sold to a recycling company for scrap.
Any business using a commercial records storage firm should inquire as to the nature of the destruction services that are available. It is an unacceptable risk to permit a storage firm to select a subcontractor to provide the records destruction service. The owner of the records is ultimately responsible for their security and, therefore, should be selecting the vendor directly.

It seems to me that some of NAID’s largest member companies are actually records storage companies now. I am in my own research trying to get a handle on how many record centers have their own equipment or how many are sub contracting it. The other concern is if NAID’s statement is true, that some centers are actually just sending the paper off to recyclers, that is a huge issue. Just remember, karma is a boomerang.

Other than that one particular item, the information contains great copy that you might be able to adapt to use in your own destruction related marketing materials.

Andrews Destruction Software

Monday, March 22nd, 2004

Andrews Software has released it’s latest software offering for the industry, Veri-Shred. While I haven’t seen the software, I am really glad to know there is another good option in the market for new and existing destruction operators. In talking with Jim Macmillan of Andrews, he suggests that this software has been designed to be an add-on to the existing Visual Corporate Keeper software, as well as a complete stand-alone program. As always, the Andrews model is driven by their very successful beta test sites, and in this case, Andrews Destruction. We should be able to see the final version at the PRISM conference in May.

ShredIt will SecurIt

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Shredit is aggressively moving forward in their plan to build their Commercial Records Storage business. Over a year ago they purchased Tri-City Records in Waterloo, Ontario, which is approximately 45 minutes from their world headquarters in Oakville. Renamed SecurIt, they moved to better facilities and have grown the business. They are now taking another leap forward. A couple of weeks ago they hired Todd Meyers, formerly of Iron Mountain, to head up the division. He comes with multi site management capabilites. SecurIt’s immediate sights are set on a strengthening the initial location, plans are well underway for a new Oakville/Toronto area operation. Using the resources of the huge database of mobile shredding users, especially those in their own backyard, the new operation will no doubt be one to watch.

And, if their history in the destruction area is any indication, a franchise model is not far behind.
