PRISM Conference Follow-up

Monday, December 13th, 2004

Great week in the Big Easy. While the turnout was not overwhelming it was good to see a number of new members and a lot of old ones.

Some news from the conference..

1. Mike Gold and his entourage from Nova were making contacts and looking for some other companies to buy.
2. Speculation is rampant that InfoGuard is sold. The buzz is that it is “Mike Gold and Company”. I did not get a definative answer on it.
3. Cintas was not in town. As the other major acquisition machine in the space, I was surprised not to see them.
4. Apparently, PRISM will not be holding the Symposium again. Too bad. I like seeing the newbies interact with the veterans.
5. John Ulmer looks like he might represent TapeTrack here in North America. He spent some time working the booth with Peter K.

Please feel free to add more to the news. Send me an email to let me know more.

ARMA Recap

Friday, October 8th, 2004

A great week in Long Beach finished, here are some thoughts based on observing the conference and the implications to the commercial records storage and management industry.

1. The industry is most definitely a high tech industry now. The bulk of the vendors were software related. To me this means that as storage vendors we must also be cutting edge as it relates to our services. A lot of vendors I talked with see a real explosion in imaging and scan on demand in the next 2 years. They are now getting established in government and fortune 500, but the big opportunity is in the rest of business.

2. Rumors love conferences. With the announcement before the conference of the new management structure at Andrews, the prevailing question was, “who is Andrews being sold to?” Cintas was assumed to be the logical choice, but if you watched Lee Miller, he spent time with Recall, Iron Mountain and others. In a personal conversation with Lee he was very clear that no sale is immenent. I have an idea that antoher big sale will be announced soon. Will keep you posted.

3. During Recall’s web demonstration before their prize giveaway, it was interesting to watch them request a status OUT box for delivery. The sales guy showing the demo seemed rather confused by the process. Didn’t look so good. I think that might be a bug in their demo model?

4. Not many records storage vendors on site. Not sure why, as this is really a great opportunity to to learn where the industry is going. The software vendors show up in force here as well as all related products for professional record managers, our clients. If they are selling to our customers, we should attempt to see what they are selling and if somehow we can leverage our existing relationships with them in providing products and services that are clearly designed for them.

Company keeps mum on investigation

Monday, September 13th, 2004

By Rebecca Fox: Otago Daily Times

Pickfords Records and Information Managers has refused to reveal the outcome of an inquiry into how documents escaped from one of its trucks to flutter across the Dunedin one-way system on Thursday.

The incident, at the corner of Andersons Bay Rd and Crawford St, saw traffic come to a standstill as people stopped to help collect the papers and return them to the truck.

Graham Sutcliffe, managing director of Pickfords’ parent company, Server New Zealand, said he was extremely concerned about the incident and an investigation had been undertaken.

It had been in contact with its client, ACC, yesterday and believed it had fully secured all remaining documents at the scene.

The investigation was completed yesterday but its findings would not be made public as it was a matter between the company and its client only, he said.

ACC spokesman Richard Braddell said yesterday it was the kind of incident ACC would prefer not to happen.

“We have taken the matter up with Pickfords. They are investigating so that it will never happen again.”

The documents had come from ACC’s claims processing unit and were destined for destruction, he believed.

Mr Sutcliffe would not comment on the destination of the papers as that was confidential between the company and its client.
